Discussion Questions

  1. What, if anything, did the early interventionist do that might have accounted for Jessie's receptiveness on the first visits to the home?

  2. Was in-home assessment of the boys handled appropriately? Should it have been handled differently?

  3. In this case, Jessie elected to enroll the boys in the program. What do you think contributed to her decision to do so? What would you have done if Jessie had decided not to enroll the boys?

  4. Based on the limited information available, do you think that goal setting for the boys was handled in the best way? How would you have proceeded in developing an individualized family service plan (IFSP) for this family?

  5. The early interventionist's "camera trick" seemed to have the desired effect. What else might have been done to engage Jessie's interest in the boys' development? Was this even an appropriate objective for the interventionist to try to achieve?

  6. Should the early interventionist have done more to encourage Jessie to return to school?  How would you have handled the issue?

  7. Was it appropriate for the early interventionist to introduce the issue of birth control? How else might she have handled this rather sensitive issue?

  8. The issue of "trust" is highlighted in this case. What did the early interventionist do to establish and maintain trust with this young mother?

  9. It seems that the early interventionist chose to focus her interactions on Jessie and the two boys. Would you have done more to involve Jessie's mother (Maxine), her boyfriend, or other members of the household?

  10. Jessie's social worker is only mentioned briefly in the story. Do you think it would have been important for the early interventionist to have ongoing contact with the social worker? What should the roles of the early interventionist and the social worker be? How would these decisions be made?

  11. Not every program has both a home-based and a classroom-based component. What were the advantages of having each in this case? Would one be preferable in providing services to adolescent parents?

  12. If you were responsible for evaluating the success of a program for teenage parents with at-risk children, what methods and measures would you use?

  13. If you were a program administrator, what precautions would you take to insure the safety of your staff members who work in potentially dangerous communities?
