Discussion Questions

  1. What factors may have contributed to the anger or bitterness that Marilyn feels toward the other team members?
     
  2. Is there anything that Marilyn might have done or failed to have done that may have contributed to the current situation?
     
  3. What options does Marilyn have when she returns to the meeting after the break? What are the possible outcomes of each option?
     
  4. What is the wisest course of action for Marilyn to take and why? Specifically, what should Marilyn do or say upon reconvening?
     
  5. Jim, the team's pediatrician, appears to function in a leadership role. What, if anything, could he do or say to rectify the situation?
     
  6. The difficulties of this team appear to go beyond the issues surrounding Adam Goodman and his family. If you were the director of this program and were responsible for  supervising all of the team members, what approach would you take to strengthen team  cohesion? How would you begin the process?
     
  7. What are the options for addressing the Goodmans' concerns about Adam's walking, talking, and destructive behavior? List the options available: 1) if the speech-language therapist and physical therapist are able to work directly with the family, and 2) if they are only available as Marilyn's consultants. How would you determine which course of action to follow?
     
  8. Can this team adequately address the issues presented by the Goodman family or are additional resources needed? If so, who or what would they be?
     
  9. In general, how should it be decided which children receive related services such as speech-language therapy, physical therapy, or occupational therapy when the availability of such services is limited within a program?
