The
Go-Between
Discussion
Questions
- The service
coordinator's liaison function between the family and other
service providers can sometimes be quite difficult. How is that
illustrated by this case?
- If you
had been assigned the position of service coordinator for the
Ramirez family, would you have handled any aspect(s) of the
situation differently? Why?
- The service
coordinator's role often includes facilitating group meetings.
How did Elaine set the tone for this meeting? How did she facilitate
the meeting? What else might she have done?
- Part of
the service coordinator's role is to keep up-to-date information
about local agencies, services, and resources. It would have
been helpful if Elaine had had more information prior to meeting
with the service providers. What information might have been
helpful? What strategies can be used to assure that information
is kept current?
- Was it
appropriate for Elaine to divulge the fact that Luisa was pregnant
when she did? Did Elaine say or do anything that betrayed Luisa's
trust in her?
- When working
from a family-centered perspective, parents should have the
opportunity to attend any meeting at which their situation is
discussed. In this case, Suzanne Smith does not want Luisa to
attend the meeting. How might the presence of the parent make
the meeting proceed differently? What are the advantages for
the parent of being present? What are the advantages for professionals
when the parent attends the meeting? Do you think there are
times when parents should not be included in meetings? Why?
- Collaboration
among service providers can be a difficult process. What factors
made collaboration difficult in this situation? What strategies
might be used to promote collaboration?
- Some issues
must be addressed at the agency level (i.e., among supervisors
and administrators) in order to support collaboration among
direct service providers. From your own experience, give some
examples of decisions that were made by agency supervisors and
administrators that facilitated collaboration among service
providers.
- Think about
the community in which you work or live. If you wanted to plan
an interagency meeting similar to the one that Anita is contemplating,
which agencies would you invite? What information would you
want to have before the meeting? Where would you get this information?
Draft a letter to the agencies you would ask to participate
in the interagency meeting.
