Discussion
Questions
- Although
we only have glimpses of the actual conversations between parents
and professionals in this case study, how well were these handled
by the project staff? Did they exemplify the principles of family-centered
care? Would you have taken a different approach in any of the
conversations?
- This program's
approach to enrolling new children was to conduct an initial
home visit followed by a visit by the family to the classroom.
How important were each of these steps and could they have been
conducted in a different order? Which staff members should be
involved in the various stages of the enrollment process?
- How important
do you think the daily communication with the mother was when
she brought Jessica into the classroom each morning? If the
center provided transportation, how might the staff maintain
ongoing communication with Jessica's parents?
- The story
doesn't describe efforts to prepare the other children and their
parents for the enrollment of a child who has complex medical
needs and is dependent upon mechanical life support. Is this
important? If so, how would you go about this?
- Anne and
Maria determined that there was no reason to exclude a child
with CMV from their classroom program. Even so, who has the
right to know if Jessica is shedding the CMV virus? Would the
situation be changed if Jessica was HIV positive, had AIDS,
or was infected with the herpes virus?
- How effectively
do you think Maria and Anne handled the difficulties they encountered
in getting the care providers to incorporate therapeutic interventions
into the daily routines and to fully include the children with
disabilities?
- This case
study describes a program that used a transdisciplinary consultation
model for developing and implementing therapeutic interventions.
What other methods or models might be used? What would the advantages
and disadvantages of each be?
- Which elements
of early intervention must to be in place to make a child care
center an acceptable placement for a child with disabilities?
What level of technical support and supervision is necessary?
- What policy
issues, funding, legal, or ethical issues are raised in considering
typical child care centers as intervention sites for children
with disabilities?
