The Disney Connection

Discussion Questions

  1. Mark Rawlings stated, "It would not deny Tommy his rights if he had to make some concessions to his medical condition." Do you agree? What do you believe is the least restrictive environment for Tommy?

  2. What were the benefits of Dr. Nakamura's active involvement in educational planning for Tommy? In general, how can educators facilitate collaboration between schools and the medical teams? Should other team members share this responsibility?

  3. List specific instances in which Isabel demonstrated adherence to a family-centered approach? What principles of family-centered practice are represented by each of these actions? Did any of Isabel's actions violate family-centered principles?

  4. To what extent do you think cultural differences or language barriers may have affected services provided to the Pham family or the decisions that were reached? Were these issues of cultural diversity dealt with appropriately?

  5. Was it appropriate for Isabel to advocate so strongly for Tommy's placement in a classroom setting? Should she continue to advocate for Tommy's inclusion in his local elementary school?

  6. The content and nature of Isabel's home-based instruction with Tommy is unclear. What approach would you take if you were responsible for providing home-based early intervention services to Tommy and his family?

  7. Imagine that you have been asked to consult with a preschool early intervention project that is attempting to make the transition of a child who is ventilator-assisted into a school-based program? What suggestions would you make to assist the team in planning and implementing this transition?

  8. Decisions about Tommy's educational placement required members of the planning team to balance quality of life considerations with those of medical risk and safety. These dual concerns may also affect decisions about Tommy's participation in daily classroom activities. How should such decisions be made?

  9. What are the legal responsibilities of the educational system for providing medical services to students with special health care needs? Do these children have a legal right to inclusion in a regular education setting? What are the responsibilities of educators or related services personnel for performing routine medical procedures in the school setting?
