The Blooming of Rose

Discussion Questions

  1. Was there anything this interventionist could have done differently to make the early home visits with Rose and her family more comfortable for all involved?

  2. What were the strategies used by this interventionist and other program staff that contributed to Rose's "blooming"?

  3. To what degree do you think Rose learned new skills and knowledge from her children's and her own participation in the preschool program? In other words, which of Rose's newly displayed competencies were a function of new learning and which were a result of providing opportunities for the performance of existing abilities?

  4. Assume for a moment that you were Anna's preschool teacher, (i.e., the early interventionist featured in this case study.) Write a letter of introduction about Rose that you will forward to Anna's new kindergarten teacher. In this letter, be sure to describe Rose's strengths as they relate to facilitating Anna's development.

  5. The early interventionist's positive perceptions of Rose and her children were not always shared by other professionals; nor were her ideas about strategies for working with Rose. How were such situations handled by the interventionist? Would you have done anything differently?

  6. Was there anything this interventionist could have done to circumvent some of the difficulties that arose between Rose and Ronald's teacher when he entered public school?

  7. The multiple and changing needs of Rose's family resulted in the involvement of a number of agencies and professionals. Would it have been desirable to have more communication and coordination among those involved with the family? If not, why? If so, who should have been involved? How would the coordination ideally have been ideally organized? Would it have needed to change over time?

  8. Anne is now entering kindergarten and the preschool will no longer have ongoing involvement in the family's life. How do you think this family will fare over the next 2-5 years? What would you hope the school system or other community agency could provide to increase the probability that Rose and her family will continue to "bloom"?
