A
Matter of Policy
Discussion
Questions
- Based
upon the available information, how has Jennifer changed Susan's
life?
- What strategies
has Susan used to cope with or adapt to Jennifer's special needs?
- How might
Susan's coping style have affected others (e.g., Kathy, Julie,
Jennifer, Debbie, Carmen, Susan's parents, Susan's ex-husband)?
- Did Kathy
handle the issue of the fever policy in the best way? Would
you have handled the situation any differently?
- Did Ron
Thompson handle the situation as he should have? Why or why
not?
- Was calling
Susan that evening a wise move on Kathy's part?
- Did Kathy
handle the telephone call to Susan in an appropriate manner?
What did she say or do to facilitate a productive exchange?
Could she have done anything differently to improve the exchange?
- Assume
Kathy's role. It is Friday and you and Susan have decided to
have lunch at a delicatessen down the street from Anthem Publishers.
The purpose of the lunch meeting, as you see it, is to find
out what Susan Berkowitz wants or needs before you offer alternatives.
- What
strategy would you use to accomplish your agenda for the meeting?
- Write
down at least three things (be specific) you might say to
start the meeting with Susan. Which of these three do you
think you would actually use and why?
- Write
down at least 10 questions you would like to ask Susan during
the course of the lunch meeting. Write them using the actual
words you think you would say if you were in Kathy's position.
- If Susan
remains firm in her decision to withdraw Jennifer from the classroom
program, what alternatives are available? Would you present
these to Susan? If so, how would you present them?
- If Susan
decides not to accept any early intervention services at the
time, how would you respond?
- Does Kathy
have an obligation to ensure that Susan understands the full
extent of Jennifer's disabilities? Does she have a responsibility
to ensure that Jennifer is receiving some form of intervention?
